VNA Measurement Techniques for Antenna Test

A Copper Mountain Technologies' VNA can make antenna measurements easy. If a pair of antennas must be measured at close range, a simple 2-port measurement can be made. For the evaluation of antenna patterns, a reference antenna can be utilized to normalize the illuminating signal. Various methods of antenna measurement, from simple to sophisticated will be examined and explained. A field pattern measurement of an antenna using a rotating platform will be demonstrated.

New Developments in Microwave Materials Measurements

Fundamental to microwave device design is knowing the electromagnetic performance of materials used in the device. Whether it is a microwave substrate, an antenna radome, or an electromagnetic inference absorber, methods are needed to evaluate materials and determine their intrinsic dielectric and magnetic properties. Designers use these intrinsic parameters (permittivity and permeability) to develop or optimize microwave and RF components. Measuring the performance of microwave materials requires a system that includes i) a measurement fixture and ii) a microwave analyzer. The fixture and the analyzer are usually connected with microwave or radio frequency (RF) cables.

Offset Frequency Measurements with a VNA

A Copper Mountain Technologies VNA can make offset measurements where the stimulus and receiver are not at the same frequencies. This allows for the characterization of upconverters, downconverters, and mixers. Because the frequencies differ, phase measurement has no meaning and only scalar amplitude is determined. Vector mixer calibration utilizing a de-embedded reference mixer makes the stimulus and receiver measurements the same and allows for full amplitude and phase characterization of the mixer under test. De-embedding of the reference mixer requires a second-tier calibration. In this webinar, both of these methods will be demonstrated.
