Integrated and Embedded VNAs, and Modular S-Parameter Measurements
Integrated and Embedded VNAs, and Modular S-Parameter Measurements
Reliable, accurate and repeatable RF measurements with a VNA benefits production lines, field applications and R&D — especially in aerospace, defense, telecommunications, automotive radar, wireless devices, and electronics manufacturing. At Copper Mountain Technologies, we go beyond just supplying VNAs (Vector Network Analyzers) — we partner with our customers to develop integrated and embedded RF measurement solutions tailored to their specific application requirements.
Every solution is engineered around your application and testing environment — right-sized for your system, optimized for the functionality you need, and priced accordingly, so you never pay for unnecessary features. We can customize hardware, software, enclosure design, and mounting options, and even incorporate your company branding into the user interface for a seamless operator experience. From concept through deployment, we support mechanical, electrical, and software integration to deliver a purpose-designed solution that meets your performance goals, workflow requirements, and budget.
Backed by in-house engineering, manufacturing, and software expertise, our team works closely with yours to modify existing VNAs or develop a purpose-built embedded solution that will fit seamlessly within your product (OEM), automated test equipment (ATE), or field-deployed system.
Whether you need to increase production throughput, reduce test complexity, minimize SWaP-C, develop a system for a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), or bring metrology-grade S-parameter measurements directly into operational environments, we have the experience and capabilities to help with three main approaches:
Standard VNA Modification
Our off-the-shelf 50 Ω and 75 Ω VNAs are designed for easy integration into your product, instrument, or automated test equipment (ATE). We provide mechanical STEP files, mounting recommendations, and guidance on thermal management, cabling, and system integration to help you incorporate the VNA into your enclosure or chassis with confidence.
Engineering support is included with every VNA purchase, giving your team direct access to RF and integration expertise throughout the design process.
Modified VNA
We can leverage our standard VNA with custom hardware and software modifications to create a solution optimized for product or unique test environment — reducing development time and cost compared to a fully custom design.
Purpose-built S-Parameter Measurement Module
Our engineers work closely with your team to design purpose-built S-parameter measurement modules with hardware and software that meets your application’s performance and integration requirements.
Why do Integrated & Embedded Solutions Matter?
From biomedical sensing and BRIX measurement to moisture analysis, material characterization, and industrial process monitoring, many applications rely on detecting subtle changes in a material’s electromagnetic properties. Copper Mountain Technologies provides the embedded RF measurement engine that enables these advanced sensing solutions.
An embedded Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) module can serve as the RF measurement engine inside a custom test instrument, allowing OEMs to develop application-specific solutions without designing RF hardware from scratch. For example, the CORVUS avionics test system from Dragoon ICTN integrates VNA technology to characterize the RF performance of cables, connectors, filters, antennas, and other microwave components. Similar embedded VNA architectures might be used in production test equipment, cable and antenna analyzers, filter tuning stations, radar and communications diagnostics, and automated RF validation systems. In these applications, engineers require direct access to accurate S-parameter measurements to verify performance, troubleshoot faults, and automate test procedures while leveraging the calibration and measurement accuracy of a commercial VNA platform.
Our compact VNAs integrate directly into your product or system, while your application software transforms RF measurements into meaningful results such as moisture content, concentration, contamination, or other quality metrics. The result is a complete sensing solution that delivers actionable information instead of complex microwave data.
Beyond the measurement itself, integrated RF sensing helps organizations improve product quality, automate inspection, reduce testing costs, accelerate development, and make faster, data-driven decisions. By transforming complex RF measurements into actionable information, businesses can increase production efficiency, strengthen quality assurance, minimize operational risk, and bring innovative products to market with greater confidence.

Advanced Dielectric Material Characterization
Standard VNA integration
SPEAG, a leading provider of dielectric measurement and electromagnetic simulation solutions, needed a more compact and robust materials measurement system that eliminated the measurement errors caused by cable movement. By integrating Copper Mountain Technologies’ R60 1-Port VNA directly into SPEAG’s Dielectric Assessment Kit (DAKS), the system moved the measurement electronics with the probe instead of relying on a stationary VNA and moving cables—resulting in more stable, accurate, and user-friendly dielectric measurements. Robotic Probe Measurements with an Integrated 1-Port VNA
Modified VNA Integration
Compass Technology Group, an engineering company specializing in microwave and millimeter-wave material measurement and non-destructive testing (NDT) systems, needed to improve the accuracy of automated robotic probe measurements. By integrating a compact R180 1-port VNA (replaced by R140B 1-Port 14 GHz VNA) directly onto the robotic arm, Copper Mountain Technologies minimized cable movement and phase instability, delivering more accurate, repeatable measurements while simplifying the system for material characterization and NDT applications. Portable Avionics Diagnostics with an Embedded VNA
Standard VNA integration
DragoonITCN, a developer of advanced avionics test and maintenance equipment, integrated a Copper Mountain Technologies VNA into its CORVUS handheld diagnostic platform to provide cable integrity and RF network analysis alongside MIL-STD-1553 bus diagnostics. Embedding the VNA enabled technicians to locate impedance faults, verify cable and antenna performance, and troubleshoot complex avionics systems with a single portable instrument—reducing maintenance time while improving the accuracy and efficiency of field diagnostics

Embedded VNA for Microwave Breast Cancer Screening
Standard VNA integration
Umbria Bioengineering Technologies (UBT), an innovative medical imaging company developing microwave-based diagnostic systems, uses a Copper Mountain Technologies 2-port VNA at the core of its MammoWave® breast cancer detection platform. The VNA provides high-speed, high-accuracy S-parameter measurements (S21) that are processed by UBT’s proprietary imaging algorithms to identify potential breast lesions using low-power microwave signals. By replacing traditional X-ray-based methods with a safe, non-ionizing alternative, MammoWave® enables a comfortable, repeatable screening approach designed to improve accessibility and early detection in clinical environments. Embedded Microwave Sensing for Food Moisture Measurement
Purpose-built S-parameter Module
Traditional moisture testing can waste up to 2 pounds of peanuts every time a sample is taken, with multiple samples often required before grading. Compass Technology Group (CTG), an engineering company specializing in microwave material measurement and non-destructive testing (NDT), developed an innovative microwave sensing concept to perform real-time, non-destructive moisture analysis. Copper Mountain Technologies supplied the miniaturized VNA technology that enabled the solution, allowing CTG’s probes and antennas to accurately characterize agricultural products and other materials while reducing waste, lowering costs, and improving process efficiency.

NASA Spacecraft Propellant Gauge on Lunar Lander
Purpose-built S-parameter Module
First proposed in 1966, NASA‘s concept of determining propellant quantity by measuring the electromagnetic resonant modes of a fuel tank remained a longstanding technical challenge. Copper Mountain Technologies’ VNAs enabled the precise measurement of resonant frequency shifts and quality factors needed to accurately determine propellant levels under zero-gravity conditions, helping turn this innovative approach into a practical solution for future space missions.
